UE Nursing Students Hold Middle School Health Fair

According to the National Center for Children in Poverty, adolescents from low-income families often lack access to health insurance or preventive care, yet they are vulnerable to health-related issues such as poor nutrition and substance use. This is true for many of the students at Glenwood Leadership Academy, a Title I school on the south side of Evansville, Indiana, that enrolls students in kindergarten through eighth grade. To share vital health information with GLA middle schoolers, 15 University of Evansville nursing students held a health and wellness fair as their senior project. Local Nursing Students Lead Wellness Program in England

Ten University of Evansville senior nursing students studying at Harlaxton College aEUR" UE's British campus near Grantham, England aEUR" recently surveyed their peers at Harlaxton about health-related needs. The results showed that while studying abroad is a life-transforming opportunity, it also can create significant changes in students' everyday habits and routines. To educate Harlaxton students about healthy lifestyle choices, the following local students were involved in leading a program called "Wellness Abroad" on October 28:

Athletic Training Students Tackle Fall Football Season

According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, football is the leading cause of school sports injuries, ranging from minor sprains and bruises to more serious fractures and head injuries. Helping young athletes prevent and treat these injuries has been the semester-long focus of local students majoring in athletic training at the University of Evansville. The following students are currently completing a clinical rotation with a high school football team:

Student-Athletes Honored At Academic Breakfast

Eighty-one University of Evansville student-athletes were recognized recently at the annual Student-Athlete Honors Breakfast at the Ridgway University Center. Student-athletes earning a grade point average of 3.5 or higher during at least one semester of the 2010-11 academic year were eligible to participate in the event. They also received the opportunity to invite faculty and staff who contributed to their academic success. The following local residents were among the student-athletes honored at the event:

Local Students Build "Box City" to Raise Awareness of Homelessness

According to a recent U.S. Census Bureau report, approximately one in six Americans live in poverty, and Indiana's poverty rate is higher than the national average. Furthermore, on any given night, around 500 people in Evansville, Indiana, are homeless aEUR" living in shelters, transitional housing facilities, cars, or tents. To raise awareness of homelessness and its impact in Evansville, the United States, and the world, the following local students participated in a Box City event Monday, October 3, on UE's campus:

Local Nursing Students Teach First Aid to Boy Scouts

According to the National Center for Health Statistics, unintentional injuries led to 28.4 million emergency department visits in a recent year. First aid aEUR" providing initial care for injured or ill people until they can receive professional medical help aEUR" is vital in minimizing or preventing serious injuries. That's why the following local University of Evansville nursing students recently helped an Evansville Boy Scout troop complete the requirements for the First Aid Merit Badge.

Local Students Create New Product

The next new product from successful Evansville company Escalade Sports could be the fruit of six University of Evansville students' labor, after a hyper-intensive, two-week course designed to create a "viable, commercialized product" for the company to add to its existing product set.
