University of Evansville Nursing Students Partner with Red Cross to Teach Lifesaving Skills

Evansville, Ind. (02/12/2025) — A new partnership between the University of Evansville (UE) Dunigan Family School of Nursing and the American Red Cross will equip students with hands-on experiences while promoting vital community safety initiatives.

Thanks to the efforts of Assistant Professors of Nursing Briana Alvey and Chantal Wood and new Red Cross board member and Chair of Nursing Katie Thomas, UE nursing students are now being trained to teach hands-only CPR and the elementary school emergency preparedness program, "Prepare with Pedro."

As part of their clinical studies and credit, these students will deliver hands-only CPR training to local businesses, civic and non-profit organizations, university students, and other community partners. Additionally, they will present "Prepare with Pedro" to kindergarten through second-grade students in the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation (EVSC) and local parochial schools throughout the semester.

"This partnership is a perfect example of active academics in action," said Katie Thomas, Chair of Nursing at UE. "Our students aren't just learning in the classroom, they're out in the community applying their knowledge, gaining invaluable experience, and making a real impact."

This collaboration not only supports the Red Cross mission of disaster preparedness and response but also provides UE students with meaningful, real-world experience in public health and education-empowering them to change lives and, in turn, change the world.
