UE ChangeLab Expands Mental Health and Education Access for Latino Community

Evansville, Ind. (04/29/2026) — The University of Evansville (UE) continues to strengthen its commitment to serving the region's Latino community through its Latino Community Outreach ChangeLab, a program dedicated to addressing critical needs in healthcare and education while fostering connection and trust.

Since its launch in fall 2020, the initiative has developed a range of programs designed to meet evolving community needs. Grounded in the philosophy of "building bridges, not walls," the outreach prioritizes culturally responsive care and community partnerships.

A recent highlight includes a collaborative mental health workshop for Latino adolescents and their families, hosted at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Evansville. The event was led by Assistant Professor of Spanish Dr. Cindy Crowe in partnership with Dr. Jennifer Braun, Director of the UE Emily M. Young Mental Health Clinic, and students from UE's Koch Family Doctor of Psychology Program. Working alongside Fr. Martin Estrada, the well-attended session focused on self-esteem and communication, offering resources in a welcoming and culturally affirming environment.

To further support access to care, the ChangeLab was awarded a $3,000 grant from the Rotary Club of Evansville to fund interpretation services at the clinic, helping ensure language is not a barrier to receiving mental health support. The initiative also contributes to advancing knowledge and awareness in the medical community. Presentations on Latino healthcare and mental health have been delivered at Deaconess Midtown Hospital, including sessions in fall 2025 and spring 2026.

"The University of Evansville continues to deepen its partnerships across the community while expanding access to culturally competent care and educational opportunity," said Dr. Cindy Crowe. "By working hand-in-hand with local organizations and healthcare providers, we are not only addressing immediate needs but also building sustainable pathways that empower individuals and families for the long term."

The University of Evansville is a private, comprehensive university with a solid foundation in the arts and sciences and professional schools in business, engineering, education, and health sciences. Established in 1854, UE is recognized across the globe for its rich tradition of innovative, academic excellence and dynamic campus community of #Changemakers.

Home of the Purple Aces, UE is located in the southwestern region of Indiana and offers over 75 majors, 17 Division I sports, and a unique study abroad experience at Harlaxton, the University's very own Victorian manor located in the countryside of England.
