Katelyn Spainhour of Floyds Knobs to Compete in 24th Annual ASCE National Concrete Canoe Competition at University of Evansville

2011 Jun 14

The University of Evansville is proud to announce that Katelyn Spainhour of Floyds Knobs, IN, will compete in the 2011 American Society of Civil Engineers National Concrete Canoe Competition, June 16-18. The University of Evansville will serve as the national competition host and also field a team. Spainhour and fellow UE students will compete against many of the top engineering schools in the United States and Canada.

The 24th annual ASCE National Concrete Canoe Competition provides civil engineering students an opportunity to gain hands-on, practical experience and leadership skills by working with concrete mix designs and project management. During the national competition, all 23 teams are judged on the design, construction, innovative features, and racing ability of each concrete canoe.

The canoes will be displayed on the University of Evansville campus during the competition, and all form judging and presentations will take place at the University. The concrete canoe races, including men's and women's slalom/endurance and sprint races, will take place Saturday, June 18 at Audubon State Park in nearby Henderson, Kentucky. The races are free and open to the public.

The top three overall winners will receive trophies and academic scholarships ranging from $1,500 to $5,000. (Scholarship recipients will be determined by the local ASCE student organization.) The fourth and fifth place overall winners will receive commemorative plaques. Plaques also will be awarded to the top team in eight individual categories including Best Design Paper, Best Oral Presentation, and Spirit of Competition.

UE was chosen to host the event from among more than 280 ASCE student chapters. It is the smallest school ever invited to serve as the national competition host. In 2009, the ASCE named UE's civil engineering program the nation's best small-school civil engineering program.

"The University of Evansville is extremely honored to host the 2011 ASCE National Concrete Canoe Competition," said UE President Thomas A. Kazee. "This event gives our students the chance to compete with the nation's best, and it is a tremendous opportunity to show off the University of Evansville campus and our College of Engineering and Computer Science."
