Hannah McNabb of Evansville Studies Chinese Health Care System Abroad

2013 Jun 13

This summer, University of Evansville student Hannah McNabb of Evansville, IN, will add an international dimension to her education: She will spend five weeks in China as part of a study abroad program that examines the country's health care system.

McNabb, majoring in Health Services Administration, will leave for China June 19 and return July 26. The program, based in the city of Hangzhou, includes courses for both nursing and health services administration students; McNabb is enrolled in "The Chinese Health Care System: The Impact of Culture and the Business Environment."

McNabb will learn about the current health care system in China and explore the cultural aspects of health care through lectures and extensive field studies. She will study comparative health care systems with Chinese students and visit numerous sites in eastern China, including major hospitals and government health agencies. In addition, faculty members from the International College at Zhejiang University will provide guest lectures on Chinese culture, history, and economic issues.

The health services administration course will focus on administrative and economic aspects of health care, while the nursing course will have a more clinical focus.

Students such as McNabb will also take Mandarin language and culture lessons that will prepare them to interact within the city of Hangzhou, and on visits to Shanghai, Beijing, and the Great Wall.

UE faculty members Bill Stroube and Amy Hall will team-teach both classes. Stroube (professor and director of the Health Services Administration Program) and Hall (White Family Endowed Professor and chair of the Dunigan Family Department of Nursing and Health Sciences) have previously team-taught courses in England, Hungary, and China.

The University of Evansville is a private, liberal arts-based university with a full-time undergraduate enrollment of approximately 2,400. UE's diverse student body represents 42 states and 46 countries. U.S. News & World Report recognizes UE as a top 10 master's-granting university in the Midwest, and third in the region for "Great Schools, Great Prices."
