2013 Mar 19

The University of Evansville is proud to announce that artwork by Portland resident Chelsea Allen was honored Monday night at the opening reception and awards presentation for the 51st annual Student Art Exhibition at UE's Melvin Peterson Gallery.

Allen, a graduate of Portland Senior High School who is majoring in Theatre, received the Merit Award for "Virago Series" (oil).

"I'm thrilled to recognize students such as Chelsea Allen for their talent, creativity, accomplishments, and dedication to their craft," said Stephanie Frasier, chair of the Department of Art and associate professor of art. "This year's exhibition showcases a strong, diverse body of work, and Chelsea and other students have clearly exceeded their project challenges by developing effective personal ideas and concepts through solid technical skills."

The juror for the exhibition was Joe Smith, who teaches ceramics at Oakland City University in Oakland City, Indiana. "I was very impressed with the quality of work submitted to this show," Smith said. "Much of my enjoyment was in seeing the degree to which artists such as Chelsea Allen have mastered their media. That has come from long hours of practice, concentration, and observation. All of that work has paid off."

The 51st annual Student Art Exhibition will remain on display through Friday, April 5. The Melvin Peterson Gallery is open noon-3 p.m. Monday-Friday. Admission is free and open to the public.

The University of Evansville is a private, liberal arts-based university with a full-time undergraduate enrollment of approximately 2,400. UE's diverse student body represents 42 states and 46 countries.
