UE Nursing Student Guy Goodness of Jasper Teaches First Aid to Boy Scouts

2011 Oct 3

According to the National Center for Health Statistics, unintentional injuries led to 28.4 million emergency department visits in a recent year. First aid - providing initial care for injured or ill people until they can receive professional medical help - is vital in minimizing or preventing serious injuries. That's why Guy Goodness of Jasper, a University of Evansville nursing student and Jasper High School graduate, recently helped an Evansville Boy Scout troop complete the requirements for the First Aid Merit Badge.

The Brotherhood of Student Nurses, an organization of male UE nursing students, held a training event for middle school Boy Scouts on Sunday, October 2, in Graves Hall on UE's campus. Goodness, along with other Brotherhood of Student Nurses members, helped teach survival and medical skills such as making a stretcher, basic wound care, using splints, and caring for an anaphylactic shock victim.

"I'm proud of Guy Goodness and the Brotherhood of Student Nurses for volunteering their time and knowledge to help Boy Scouts in the Evansville community," said Amy Hall, UE's White Family Endowed Professor of Nursing and chair of the Dunigan Family Department of Health Sciences. "Not only did Guy teach important skills with practical applications, but he empowered young men to respond with leadership and competence when confronted with life-threatening situations."
